Particle segregation in inclined high-speed granular flows

چکیده
We report on the discovery, using numerical simulations, of a segregation pattern in high-speed granular flows, which size is primarily driven by two-dimensional temperature gradients, rather than gravity. In contrast to slower flows gentle slopes, steep large particles no longer accumulate upper layers flow, but are trapped interior. The strong gradients that develop between interior flow and surrounding dilute periphery appear govern mechanism. Interestingly, these new segregated run at much faster speed similar monodisperse flows. This opens up promising perspectives for transporting material with enhanced efficiency. Importantly, we show kinetic theory dense, inclined binary mixtures can provide relevant theoretical framework explain patterns observed simulations.

Unsteady granular flows down an inclined plane.
The continuum description of granular flows is still a challenge despite their importance in many geophysical and industrial applications. We extend previous works, which have explored steady flow properties, by focusing on unsteady flows accelerating or decelerating down an inclined plane in the simple shear configuration. We solve the flow kinematics analytically, including predictions of evo...
متن کاملGranular Segregation in Collisional Shearing Flows
This paper considers segregation in collisional granular shearing ows from the experimental, computational, and theoretical standpoints. We focus on a phenomenon of segregation where the separation of grains by size or mass is driven by spatial gradients in the uctuation energy of the grains. We report experiments carried out in microgravity with a shear cell shaped as a race track and containi...
متن کاملSegregation-driven organization in chaotic granular flows.
An important industrial problem that provides fascinating puzzles in pattern formation is the tendency for granular mixtures to de-mix or segregate. Small differences in either size or density lead to flow-induced segregation. Similar to fluids, noncohesive granular materials can display chaotic advection; when this happens chaos and segregation compete with each other, giving rise to a wealth ...
متن کاملMultiscale modeling of segregation in granular flows
Modeling and simulation of segregation phenomena in granular flows are investigated. Computational models at different scales ranging from particle level (microscale) to continuum level (macroscale) are employed in order to determine the important microscale physics relevant to macroscale modeling. The capability of a multi-fluid model to capture segregation caused by density difference is demo...
متن کاملParticle Size Segregation in Granular Avalanches
When particles with different material properties are segregated by size or density they often have a subtle feedback on the local mobility of the granular material, which can significantly modify the bulk flow. Perhaps the most striking example of this segregation-mobility feedback occurs in geophysical mass flows, such as debris-flows, dense pyroclastic avalanches and snow avalanches. Larger ...
